nv_writer
User guide
This page refers to the latest nv_writer release. You can open it with Help > Distraction-free writing plugin Online help.
The plugin adds a Write in distraction free mode entry to both
the novelibre Section menu and the section context menu,
and a Distraction-free writing plugin Options entry to the Tools menu,
and a Distraction-free writing plugin Online help entry to the Help menu.
The Toolbar gets a
button.
You can type scene by scene as if you were using a typewriter or a DOS word processor. This is much faster than working with OpenOffice/LibreOffice. You can enter and emphasize text, and you can create new sections. There is no spell check, nor can you assign foreign languages to newly entered text. However, formatting and language assignments already entered with OpenOffice/LibreOffice Writer are retained. This makes it possible to crank out your first draft entirely in novelibre, and then revise the manuscript in OpenOffice or LibreOffice Writer. The word count is displayed, so you can also use nv_writer for a NaNoWriMo-style word sprint in between.
Start the distraction-free writing mode
Select the section to start with (optional).
If no editable section is selected on entering the writing mode, the last section is loaded and the cursor position is restored. If the last section is unknown, the first editable section is loaded.
If the last edited section is selected on entering the writing mode, the cursor position is restored.
If another editable section is selected on entering the writing mode, the cursor is set to the beginning.
To enter the distraction free editing mode, either
hit
F11, orright-click the selected section and select Write in distraction free mode, or
click Section > Write in distraction free mode, or
click on the
button on the toolbar.
Important
In order to avoid confusion, the distraction-free editor will not start, if either
an editable manuscript exists, or
the project is locked.
So if yo have a regular manuscript or a manuscript for third-party word processing, you may want to discard it after updating your novelibre project.
End the distraction-free writing mode
Hit
EscorAlt-F4(Windows) orCtrl-Q(Linux) to finish the editing session.
Hint
Unlike Writer, the distraction-free editor does not automatically replace quotation marks, dashes, etc. Typographical adjustments must therefore be made in a proofreading process on the regular manuscript using Writer. I recommend one of the curly extensions for this purpose.
